During perimenopause and menopause, your estrogen levels decline, resulting in a range of symptoms that can disrupt your life. While symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats seem to be well known, cognitive and sexual symptoms such as brain fog, fatigue, and low libido can be just as disruptive. These surprising conditions can sneak up on you in unexpected ways.

           Brain Fog

If you’re feeling less focused and sharp than usual – frequently losing your keys or your train of thought – that can be a symptom of brain fog, a lesser-known symptom of perimenopause. While this condition can be frustrating, many women notice an improvement once they’ve gone through menopause. Trouble concentrating can also be caused by anxiety or undiagnosed ADHD, so you should ask a medical professional about these possibilities.

           Fatigue

Directly related to brain fog is fatigue, often caused by disrupted sleep. Many women experience poor sleep during perimenopause, which can affect their mood and concentration. Hot flashes and night sweats can disrupt your sleep, and reduced levels of estrogen and progesterone can affect your ability to relax, fall asleep, and stay asleep. Lower muscle mass and higher cortisol levels can also contribute to feelings of fatigue.

           Low Libido

Women going through perimenopause and menopause may experience a reduced sex drive. The factors contributing to this condition include less natural lubrication, painful periods or pelvic discomfort, exhaustion, and mood swings and irritability. After menopause, vaginal dryness and thinning of vaginal tissue may cause pain during intercourse.

           How to Cope

            Rest:

Getting quality sleep is key to alleviating these symptoms. Restorative sleep can help you feel more focused and less fatigued.

            Exercise:

Regular exercise can help you to feel more relaxed and sleep better.

            Diet:

A healthy diet that helps to balance blood sugar levels can reduce fatigue. Be sure you’re getting all the vitamins and minerals you need as well.

            Mindfulness:

Deep breathing and other mindfulness techniques can alleviate stress and help you to feel more focused.

            Treatment:

HRT Therapy (Hormone Replacement Therapy) can relieve many symptoms of perimenopause.

           Lifestyle Changes

            Refrain from smoking:

Smoking increases the risk of heart attack and stroke as well as osteoporosis and hip fractures.

            Limit caffeine intake:

Drinking more than three cups of coffee per day can trigger hot flashes and may even contribute to osteoporosis.

            Exercise:

Regular exercise, including weight-bearing exercise, can help to relieve hot flashes and reduces the risk of osteoporosis, heart attack, and stroke.

            Get sunlight

: Getting plenty of sunlight and vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium. It can also improve your mood!

            Dress in layers:

Dressing in layers can help you to deal with the discomfort that comes from hot flashes.

            Use lubricants and moisturizers:

To treat vaginal dryness, try lubricants or vaginal moisturizers.

           Supplements

Effective supplements can help to treat the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause by easing hot flashes, supporting healthy sleep, easing fatigue and mood changes, helping vaginal dryness, supporting bone health, and more. Supplements should have the right combination of ingredients to provide comprehensive support, so be sure to consult a professional before starting a supplement program.

           Hormone Therapy

Hormone therapy may provide relief from the most bothersome symptoms of perimenopause and menopause. Treatment will depend on your symptoms and the level to which they’re impacting your quality of life. A combination of estrogen and progesterone can help to reduce hot flashes, sleep disturbances, mood changes, and vaginal dryness. Because of some risks associated with HRT therapy, it’s important to talk to a healthcare professional and be fully informed in your decision to try hormone replacement therapy.

           When to See a Doctor

If the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause are affecting your quality of life, consider seeing a healthcare professional. Missed periods or unusually heavy or painful periods, painful sex, frequent hot flashes, and other disruptive symptoms are all good reasons to seek medical guidance in navigating the challenges of menopause. Talk with a professional about your symptoms and learn more about the treatment options available.

If you’re over the age of 40 and you have trouble falling asleep or can’t seem to get a good night’s sleep, it could be one of the symptoms of perimenopause. Sleep disturbances are a common part of the transition leading to menopause, and you may experience them even before your periods start changing.

What Causes Sleep Disorders During Perimenopause?

Sleepless nights or waking up in the middle of the night can be the result of factors including:

            Hormonal Changes:

Estrogen helps in the production of serotonin and melatonin, two hormones that help you fall asleep and stay asleep. Progesterone has calming effects and promotes deep sleep. As these hormones fluctuate during perimenopause, your sleep may be affected.

            Night Sweats and Hot Flashes:

Changing hormone levels also affect your thermoregulation, making you more sensitive to changes in body temperature. When hot flashes happen at night, you may wake up sweaty and uncomfortable, then have difficulty falling back asleep.

            Stress:

High levels of stress can increase your nighttime cortisol levels, causing you to wake up and then have trouble falling asleep again.

What Causes Weight Gain During Perimenopause?

            Reduced Muscle Mass:

Weight gain in perimenopausal women can be caused in part by reduced muscle mass. Muscle tissue burns more calories at rest than fat tissue, so the less muscle you have, the harder it is to lose weight.

            Fluctuating Hormones:

While raised estrogen levels can lead to fat storage around the abdomen, lowered estrogen can also cause the body to store fat. Decreased progesterone can cause cravings and water retention.

            Insulin Resistance:

Changing hormones can also make it harder for your body to manage blood sugar levels, leading to increased fat storage and sugar and carb cravings.

How Can I Manage My Weight?

Lifestyle changes are an essential part of weight management during perimenopause and menopause. While most women become less active as they age, it’s important to keep moving every day.

Sleep disruptions are another symptom of perimenopause, and poor-quality sleep can lead to weight gain, so it’s important to address this issue as well.

Stress can raise cortisol levels, leading to fat storage in the abdominal area.

A balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management are all key strategies in managing your weight during this transitional phase.

If you’ve started to experience the symptoms of perimenopause, you may be wondering - how long will this last? Unfortunately, there’s no easy answer to this question, and your experience could be very different from someone else’s. Remember that menopause is complete when a woman has gone for a full year without getting a period, while perimenopause is the transitional time leading up to menopause. Both can affect you in many ways. Perimenopause can begin at different ages and last for different times, but the following information can give you an idea of what to expect.

Most women in the United States go through menopause at the age of 51, but some will experience it as early as 40 or as late as their late fifties.

For most women, the hormonal and biological changes and physical symptoms that occur during perimenopause last an average of three to five years. In some cases, symptoms can last as many as eight years, while for other women, they may last for as few as two.

Typically, perimenopause begins in a woman’s mid-forties. For others, symptoms can begin as early as their thirties.

Some women may have few to no symptoms during perimenopause. Others may experience symptoms so severe that they will need help from a healthcare professional.

Crying easily, low self-esteem, feeling numb, and losing interest in your normal activities can all be symptoms of mood changes during the transition to menopause. Nearly half of women going through perimenopause may experience symptoms similar to PMS. Unlike PMS, these symptoms won’t show up on a predictable schedule, making them all the more challenging.

What Causes Mood Swings During Perimenopause?

Hormonal fluctuations during perimenopause are unpredictable, making their effect on your mood equally unpredictable. Hot flashes, sleep problems, and other discomforts can make your mood worse as well. Other factors that could contribute to mood changes at this time of life may have more to do with external factors such as the stress of managing a demanding job, raising children, sending children off to college, caring for aging parents, and other life changes.

You’ve had a long day, but you’re finally getting some well-deserved rest when suddenly, you wake up sweaty and uncomfortable - another night’s sleep disrupted. Hot flashes and night sweats are common for women going through perimenopause, but the fact that they’re normal doesn’t make them any less frustrating. If you’ve experienced hot flashes or night sweats, read on to find out more about what causes them and what you can do about them.

What Causes Hot Flashes and Night Sweats?

During perimenopause, your hormone levels change from month to month. Changes in estrogen and progesterone, in particular, can lead to hot flashes and night sweats. When estrogen surges but then drops suddenly, the hypothalamus, the part of the brain responsible for the body’s thermoregulation, becomes more sensitive to changes in your body temperature. This can make you feel like you're overheating. Progesterone can also be inconsistent during perimenopause, which can cause irregular menstrual cycles and contribute to the problem.

Also referred to as vasomotor symptoms, hot flashes often start in the face, neck, or chest, and you may feel flushed or sweaty. When a hot flash happens at night, sweating may be excessive and can disrupt your sleep.

Hormonal changes aren’t the only reason that night sweats occur, however. Stress, diet, environment, and overall health can also affect your thermoregulation. Caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods could trigger hot flashes, while your bedding, sleepwear, and room temperature may also play a role.

If you’ve noticed that you’re getting your period less frequently or it’s changed in some way, you may be feeling concerned. While everyone’s cycle is different and it’s normal to have slight variations in your period, you’re probably wondering what caused the change. Many different factors can be behind changes in your period, including fluctuating hormone levels, some health conditions or medications, stress, and more.

Normal menstrual periods can last between four to seven days and usually occur every twenty-eight days, with the average cycle being 29 days. An irregular period would occur fewer than twenty-one days or more than thirty-five days apart. Your period is also considered irregular if it’s much heavier or lighter than usual or if you miss three or more periods in a row. Bleeding or spotting between periods, after sex, or after menopause is also considered irregular. Now that we’ve defined what an “irregular” period is, we can explain the causes behind it.

           What Causes Irregular Periods?

           Perimenopause

During perimenopause, the transitional phase leading to menopause, women between 40 and 50 will experience hormonal changes that could include irregular periods. During perimenopause, your estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate from month to month, which can cause your cycle to change. Your periods can be heavier or lighter than usual or longer or shorter than usual. You could also experience longer times between cycles, and you could skip a cycle altogether.

            Lifestyle and Stress

Stress and changes to your lifestyle can affect your cycle at any age. If you suffer from a great deal of stress, your period can become irregular. Losing or gaining a large amount of weight can also affect your cycle, as can extreme exercise that results in low body fat.

If you’ve been using birth control pills but then stop, you may have irregular periods for up to six months afterwards. Some medications such as blood thinners or steroids, can also affect your period. If you’re breastfeeding or have had a miscarriage, these can affect your cycle as well.

Medical conditions that cause irregular periods include endometriosis, where endometrial tissue grows outside of your uterus; pelvic inflammatory disease, a bacterial infection; polycystic ovary syndrome, when your ovaries produce hormones that prevent or delay ovulation; thyroid or pituitary gland disorders; and uterine or ovarian cancer. That’s why it’s important to consult a medical professional if you notice changes to your cycle.

           Irregular or Skipped Periods

As your hormone levels fall during perimenopause, your periods could become irregular, and you may experience light, late, or skipped periods. Even when your periods are irregular, you can still get pregnant, so it’s important to continue to take precautions until menopause is complete.

           Hot Flashes

If you suddenly feel uncomfortably warm and flushed, especially in the face or neck, you’re experiencing a hot flash. Hot flashes may be related to changes in your estrogen levels and the way your blood vessels relax and contract. They usually come on quickly and last a few seconds to a few minutes.

           Sleep Disorders and Fatigue

Hot flashes can also disrupt your sleep, negatively affecting your energy levels and emotions over time. You may also have difficulty falling and staying asleep or experience less healthy, restorative sleep.

           Brain Fog

Estrogen plays a key role in brain function, so as your estrogen levels decrease during perimenopause and menopause, you may experience what many refer to as “brain fog.” You may feel like you’ve become more forgetful, that you struggle to focus, or that you’re simply mentally fatigued, even when you get enough sleep.

           Joint Pain

Hormonal declines can affect your muscles and bones, resulting in pain in your knees, shoulders, elbows, and hands. Stiffness or pain in your joints will often be worse in the morning and can improve with physical activity.

           Changes to Hair and Skin

Hormone changes during menopause can affect your scalp health, hair follicle function, and hair growth cycle. You may experience changes in your hair, including dryness, shedding, and thinning. You may also suffer from dry skin during menopause.

           Vaginal Drying

Falling estrogen levels also contribute to a decrease in the vagina’s natural lubricants. The lining of the vaginal wall can also thin and lose elasticity, which can cause sex to be painful. You may also be more prone to vaginal and urinary tract infections during this time.

           Depression and Irritability

While the chemical changes happening during menopause don’t increase the risk of depression, the other changes and symptoms you experience in middle age can contribute to feelings of sadness. You may also experience irritability caused by poor sleep due to hot flashes.

           Health Risks

           Osteoporosis

Because estrogen levels are lower during menopause, the risk of osteoporosis, the thinning of bones, is higher. Vitamin D, calcium, and exercise can help to prevent this condition. Women can begin to lose bone as early as age 30, so it’s important to start healthy habits well before perimenopause begins.

           Cardiovascular Disease

Before menopause, women have lower rates of heart attack and stroke than men, but after menopause, the rate of heart disease in women increases. Again, healthy habits are key.

While many women may think of menopause as the time during middle age that their period ends, the symptoms of menopause can last for years and occur during a stage called perimenopause. Read on to learn more about the conditions you might experience during this change.

If you haven’t had a period for one full year, you’re in menopause. Most women in the U.S. go through menopause in their early fifties, but for some women, it can occur much earlier or later.

           Perimenopause

Your ovaries produce hormones that control your period and other processes in your body, but as you get closer to menopause, your ovaries gradually produce fewer of these hormones. We call this transitional phase “perimenopause.”

The hormonal and biological changes and physical symptoms that occur during perimenopause last an average of three to five years, but they can last as few as two years or as many as eight years for some women. While some women may have few to no symptoms during this time, many will, and it can be a different experience for everyone. Some of the symptoms of menopause and perimenopause include:
